Exaggerated Reality

Real Life is a webcomic drawn and authored by Greg Dean. Begun on November 15, 1999 and published on weekdays, the comic is loosely based around the real lives of Greg and his friends (hence the name).

‘Loosely’ ranges from verbatim quotes to completely ludicrous events including time travel and mecha combat. The characters tend to be rather heavily exaggerated versions of their actual selves. Real Life focuses on humor related to video games, science fiction, and other such “geek humor”, although in recent times Dean has been finding less time for video games and as such has been directing his comic slightly away from that. Though by name it claims to be based on real life, the characters live lives very much of their own and are best known for breaking the fourth wall. Real Life is also a major spreader of various memes such as “Fuego”, “ShirtNinja” and “The Game”.

Once part of Keenspot, Real Life has been part of the Blank Label Comics collective since June 22, 2005. The Real Life website is currently hosted by Phillip Karlsson’s Dumbrella Hosting service.

The comic is in English, but there also exists a German translation for parts of the archive.

Year one of Real Life is available on paperback ISBN 0-9746966-2-5.

Characters

Major characters

Greg (Gregory David Dean) - The main character of the strip, and a fictional representation of the author of the comic. Tends to be a bit of a wingnut at times, and tends to act before he thinks things through; however, his actions are primarily a product of a na?vet. Greg seems to constantly switch roles between being the voice of reason and the voice in need of reason. He is also very fond of Pepsi cola, to the point of addiction, going so far as to import Mexican Pepsi because it contains real sugar instead of corn syrup. Greg sometimes appears as his not-so-secret alter ego the Shirt Ninja, speaking in Japanese and carrying his own subtitles. He used to work as a fuel jock at a small airport, but has recently graduated from culinary school. He previously lived in Sacramento and Rancho Cordova, both CA, but moved to San Francisco - and has recently moved again to Lockhart, TX.

Elizabeth “Liz” Dean (n Van Buskirk) - Greg’s wife, and an avid cosplayer. She started out as “Lizzy” to avoid confusion between the “Liz” he had already put in the comic and this new Liz. Eventually, the old Liz was phased out and now the new one is called Liz. She has a fizzy, bubbly personality, and tends to be the only one in the strip with a level head. She was engaged, and later married, to Greg in early 2005. The comic mainly features Greg and/or Liz these days.

Tony Flansaas - The comic’s resident evil overlord. Hdas made many attempts over the course of the comic’s existence to take over the world, and has even succeeded a couple of times. Think of any technological achievement made in the past two years, and even a number that won’t come around for decades yet — Tony did it 5 years ago, an made it out of bubblegum, spare hard drive parts, and a DivX player too. He’s almost like a cross between MacGyver and Dr. Evil. Tony is often the fulcrum on which most of Real Life’s more far-fetched story lines revolve. His character is presented in such a way so that the readers start to believe that the real life Tony might just have a BattleMech, dimension-hopping TV remote or a cloning machine lying around the house. His most recent achievement was a space station called “DS-1″, which stands for Death Station 1 however, this station was destroyed in late 2008. Has a not-so-secret identity counterpoint to Greg’s Shirt Ninja called the Black Pants Samurai, only seen in one storyline thus far: he speaks via bad voice acting (and presumably atrocious lip-synching).

Dave Reynolds - Resident powergamer and supernerd. Play him in Quake III Arena and he’ll pwn you, no questions asked. While the real Dave’s currently in the Navy, that doesn’t stop him from showing up and adding some of his cynical, nerdy point of view to a strip. Dave rivals Tony in technical ability. However, whereas Tony seems to be a genius in all subjects, Dave’s genius seems to lie mostly in computers. In one of the earlier comic strips, Dave upgraded his computer into a sentient being. The computer, PAL, went on to become a minor character in the strip, and was joined over time by several other technologically improved computers and consoles. His iPod apparently holds every Backstreet Boys…(and so on)

When The Game signed onto Aftermath Entertainment in 2003, it was arranged that he would work with G-Unit and G-Unit Records in order to create a growing buzz for him that would also fuel an interest in G-Unit. The sudden feud between the pair, who had been marketed as having a mentor/prot relationship, stemmed from alleged rumors that The Game had recorded with G-Unit nemesis Joe Budden on a track that was released in 2004. 50 Cent had also advised The Game not to appear on a Jim Jones video, which was to come out before the “How We Do” video, however, The Game did so anyway. The two were able to put their differences aside for the release of The Game’s debut album, The Documentary which was released on January 18, 2005. The album was a big success for the rapper and had three singles that featured 50 Cent. The release date of 50 Cent’s second album, The Massacre, was pushed back in order to accommodate The Game’s album, causing anger by 50 Cent towards Interscope Records. Tensions would rise during the filming of the music video for The Game’s third single, “Hate It or Love It”, when 50 Cent refused to shoot a scene in the front seat of a car, instead sitting in the back (The Game’s brother, Big Fase 100, would replace him). With 50 Cent’s album also enjoying major success, the feud would then take an unexpected rise.

Feud begins

The Game had released images depicting the rap group in many parodies on some of his previous mixtapes, including Ghost Unit, which pictures them as parapsychologists, The Ghostbusters. In response, G-Unit published a mixtape cover of the rapper’s head copied onto the body of an exotic dancer on the cover of G-Unit Radio Part 21, causing The Game to release “The Funeral (100 Bars)”, a track aimed towards the G-Unit camp. The Game launched a boycott of G-Unit called “G-Unot”.

In XXL magazine, 50 Cent doubted that The Game would succeed on his second album without his assistance, claiming The Game to be a good rapper, but not songwriter. 50 Cent stated that he wrote six of The Documentary’s eighteen tracks (“Hate It or Love It,” “How We Do,” “Church for Thugs”, “Special”, “Higher”, and “Westside Story”), which The Game denied.

Although both rappers were once signed to Aftermath Entertainment, the feud between them has led to The Game leaving the record label (although others claim 50 Cent pressured Dr. Dre to kick him off). In October 2006, The Game extended a peace treaty to 50 Cent, which wasn’t immediately responded to. A couple of days later, on Power 106, he would state that the treaty was offered for one day only. The Game later released “SoundScan”, a track targeting G-Unit members in response to Lloyd Banks freestyle on BET Rap City which was aimed at The Game. “SoundScan” was mainly aimed at the lower sales of Lloyd Banks’ second effort, Rotten Apple in comparison to his first, The Hunger For More.

Failed reconciliation

At one point, it was reported that Busta Rhymes wanted to get 50 Cent and The Game together on the same track which was to be included on his new album, I’m Blessed. This way, he intended to end the feud between the two. Busta Rhymes commented on the feud. He said:

I have always had problem with the beef. If you listen to “The Doctor’s Advocate”, which is the title track on his [The Game's] album, I didn’t agree with his role at how he handled the situation. 50, even though I don’t agree with everything he has done, he is still someone of an orchestrator of the situation from a general rank standpoint. If you are an apprentice, coming under someone, there is a general pride and ego. You gotta swallow a certain thing.

However, the reconciliation will not happen any time soon because of Tony Yayo’s alleged attack on James “Lil’ Henchmen” Rosemond, who is the son of Jimmy “Henchmen” Rosemond. Tony Yayo was arrested on March 24, 2007 and was accused of smacking Lil’ Henchmen for wearing the shirt of his father’s record label, Czar Entertainment. Czar Entertainment manages many artists, including The Game. Tony Yayo, 50 Cent, and their entourage allegedly approached Lil’ Henchmen in a black SUV. Four men jumped out of the car. Tony Yayo then showed the boy that he had a gun, and he then proceeded to antagonize and slap the boy. Tony Yayo has been charged for assault and he was later released with a $5,000 bail. He has pleaded not guilty. 50 Cent has strongly denied his involvement and has stated that he was in his home in Connecticut when the…(and so on)

North-South Expressway in Malaysia. A roadway can be a line source of air and noise pollution and need not be a straight line.

A line source is a source of air, noise, water contamination or electromagnetic radiation that emanates from a linear (one-dimensional) geometry. The most prominent linear sources are roadway air pollution, aircraft air emissions, roadway noise, certain types of water pollution sources that emanate over a range of river extent rather than from a discrete point, elongated light tubes, and electromagnetic antennas. While point sources of pollution were studied since the late nineteenth century, linear sources did not receive much attention from scientists until the late 1960s, when environmental regulations for highways and airports began to emerge. At the same time, computers with the processing power to accommodate the data processing needs of the computer models required to tackle these one-dimensional sources became more available.

In addition, this era of the 1960s saw the first emergence of environmental scientists who spanned the disciplines required to accomplish these studies. For example, meteorologists, chemists, and computer scientists in the air pollution field were required to build complex models to address roadway air dispersion modeling. Prior to the 1960s, these specialities tended to work within their own disciplines, but with the advent of NEPA, the Clean Air Act, the Noise Control Act in the USA, and other seminal legislation, the era of multidisciplinary environmental science had begun.

For electromagnetic linear sources, the principal early advances in computer modeling arose in the Soviet Union and USA when the end of World War II and the Cold War were fought partially by progress in electronic warfare, including the technologies of active antenna arrays.

Linear air pollution source

Main article: Roadway air dispersion modeling

Air pollution levels near major highways and urban arterials are in violation of U.S. National Ambient Air Quality Standards where millions of Americans live or work. Even the interior of a building does not really protect inhabitants from adverse exterior air quality, since the exterior air is the intake supply, and it is well known that indoor air quality is typically worse than exterior air.

A roadway travelled by motor vehicles can be idealized by a line source emitting air pollutants. This mathematical problem was first solved in 1970 by a collaboration of physics, mathematics and computer science. The original theory assumed steady-state traffic conditions and meteorology on a perfectly straight roadway. Currently the models have evolved to treat variable meteorology, time-variant traffic operations and complex roadbed geometries. Current technology allows highway designers and city planners to analyze alternative roadway development plans and assess air quality impacts. The same basic model theory can be applied to airport operations, since the linear source is merely an inclined line. In the early 1970s these ESL models were refined into area source models to account for the finite width of the roadway.

Linear noise source

Main article: Roadway noise

The New Jersey Turnpike was one of the earliest line sources analyzed for noise

Roadway noise is the most important example of a linear noise source, since it comprises about 80 percent of the environmental noise exposure for humans worldwide. In the 1960s, when computer modeling of this phenomenon was perfected, the first applications of linear source noise modeling became systematic. After passage of the National Environmental Policy Act and Noise Control Act, the demand for detailed analysis soared, and decision makers began to look to acoustical scientists for answers regarding the planning of new roadways and the design of noise mitigation. The intensity of roadway noise is governed by the following variables: traffic operations (speed, truck mix, age of vehicle fleet), roadway surface type, tire types, roadway geometrics, terrain, micrometeorology and the geometry of area structures.

Due to the complexity of the variables, a line source acoustic model must be a computer model that can analyze sound levels in the vicinity of roadways. The first meaningful models arose in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Two of the leading research teams were BBN in Boston and ESL Inc. of Sunnyvale, California. Both of these groups developed complex mathematical models to allow the study of alternate roadway designs, traffic operations and noise mitigation strategies in an arbitrary setting. Later model alterations have come into widespread use among state Departments of…(and so on)

Crocodile Mile is an outdoor water toy for children. It consists of a plastic track, a ramp, a hoop, and a “splash pool.” In order to use the Mile, one runs toward the track, slides along its length, flies off the ramp and through the hoop (and through the curtain covering the hoop, which features an image of a crocodile), and lands in the splash pool. Although comparable to the well-known Slip ‘n Slide, the latter does not have a ramp or a pool in which to splash.

During the 1980s, Crocodile Mile was heavily advertised on television. The lyrics to its jingle are as follows: “You run, you slide, you hit the bump, and take a dive.”

The Crocodile Mile remained popular until about the late 1990s, when the safety hazards associated with other slides, coupled with the availability of “real” water slides and swimming pools hastened its decline. However, in recent years, inflatable slides have become more popular, especially for large groups.

Regenerative brake

I want to introduct something about Y series three phase electric motor.
Y series three phase electric motor
XNY-Y series motor is totally enclosed and fan-cooling, three-phase squirrel cage induction motor, that is newly designed in conformity with the relevant requirements of IEC standards. XNY-Y series motors have outstanding performance, such as high efficiency, energy-saving, high starting torque, low noise, little vibration, reliable operation and easy maintenance, etc. XNY-Y series motors are widely used in many places, where there doesn’t exist combustible, explosive or corrosive gas, and without any special requirements, such as machine tools, pumps, fans, transport machinery, mixer, agriculture machinery and food machines, etc.

A regenerative brake is a mechanism that reduces vehicle speed by converting some of its kinetic energy into another useful form of energy. This captured energy is then stored for future use or fed back into a power system for use by other vehicles.

For example, electrical regenerative brakes in electric railway vehicles feed the generated electricity back into the supply system. In battery electric and hybrid electric vehicles, the energy is stored in a battery or bank of capacitors for later use. Other forms of energy storage which may be used include compressed air and flywheels.

Regenerative braking should not be confused with dynamic braking, which dissipates the electrical energy as heat and thus is less energy efficient.

Limitations

Traditional friction-based braking is still used with electrical regenerative braking for the following reasons:

The regenerative braking effect rapidly reduces at lower speeds, therefore the friction brake is still required in order to bring the vehicle to a complete halt, although malfunction of a dynamo can still provide resistance for a while.

The friction brake is a necessary back-up in the event of failure of the regenerative brake.

Most road vehicles with regenerative braking only have power on some wheels (as in a 2WD car) and regenerative braking power only applies to such wheels, so in order to provide controlled braking under difficult conditions (such as in wet roads) friction based braking is necessary on the other wheels.

The amount of electrical energy capable of dissipation is limited by either the capacity of the supply system to absorb this energy or on the state of charge of the battery or capacitors. No regenerative braking effect can occur if another electrical component on the same supply system is not currently drawing power and if the battery or capacitors are already charged. For this reason, it is normal to also incorporate dynamic braking to absorb the excess energy.

Under emergency braking it is desirable that the braking force exerted be the maximum allowed by the friction between the wheels and the surface without slipping, over the entire speed range from the vehicle’s maximum speed down to zero. The maximum force available for acceleration is typically much less than this except in the case of extreme high-performance vehicles. Therefore, the power required to be dissipated by the braking system under emergency braking conditions may be many times the maximum power which is delivered under acceleration. Traction motors sized to handle the drive power may not be able to cope with the extra load and the battery may not be able to accept charge at a sufficiently high rate. Friction braking is required to absorb the surplus energy in order to allow an acceptable emergency braking performance.

For these reasons there is typically the need to control the regenerative braking and match the friction and regenerative braking to produce the desired total braking output. The GM EV-1 was the first commercial car to do this. Engineers Abraham Farag and Loren Majersik were issued 2 patents for this ‘Brake by Wire’ technology.

The motor as a Generator

Regenerative braking utilizes the fact that an electric motor can also act as a generator. The vehicle’s electric traction motor is operated as a generator during braking and its output is supplied to an electrical load. It is the transfer of energy to the load which provides the braking effect.

An early example of this system was the Energy Regeneration Brake, developed in 1967 for the Amitron. This was a completely battery powered urban concept car whose batteries were recharged by regenerative braking, thus increasing the range of the automobile.

Electric railway vehicle operation

During braking, the traction motor connections are altered to turn them into electrical generators. The motor fields are connected across the main traction generator (MG) and the motor armatures are connected across the load. The MG now excites the motor fields. The rolling locomotive or multiple unit wheels turn the motor armatures, and the motors act as generators, either sending the generated current through onboard resistors (dynamic braking) or back into the supply (regenerative braking)For a given direction of travel, current flow through the motor armatures during braking will be opposite to that during motoring. Therefore, the motor exerts torque in a direction…(and so on)

The Everleigh sisters

Minna Everleigh was born Minna Simms in Greene County, Virginia on July 13, 1866 and died in New York, New York on September 16, 1948. Her older sister Ada (or Aida) was born Ada Simms near Greene County on February 15, 1864. She died in Charlottesville, Virginia on January 5, 1960.

The two created an alternative biography, which has long been accepted as factual, although Karen Abbott has debunked their story.

According to their story, Minna and Ada Simms were born outside of Louisville, Kentucky in 1876 to a wealthy lawyer who had fled to Kentucky from Virginia when Benedict Arnold invaded Virginia in 1781. The two sisters had been to finishing school and had proper social debuts. When Minna was seventeen, she says, she married a man whose last name was Lester who turned out to be abusive. Ada claims to have been married to Lester’s brother, who also turned out to be abusive. After both marriages had failed, they became actresses. Claiming their father died in the early 1890s, they said they came into a legacy of $35,000.

According to Abbott, whose research included an interview with the sisters’ great niece, Minna and Ada were born in Greene County, Virginia to Montgomery Simms, his second and third daughters. Their mother died when they were young, as did an older and younger sister. There were seven children total, although only five survived to adulthood. Although the family was wealthy at the time of her birth, they lost much of their wealth during the Civil War and the family lost their plantation when they couldn’t pay their taxes. There is no proof that either sister was ever married.

Stranded by a theatre company in Omaha, Nebraska, the sisters changed their last name to “Everleigh,” adapted from their grandmother’s correspondence (“Everly Yours,” she would sign) and opened their first brothel in Omaha in 1895. When the Trans-Mississippi and International Exposition was held in Omaha in 1898 they opened a second brothel in the vicinity of the event in Kountze Park and quickly doubled their investment. They then decided to close their brothels and seek out a more affluent city.

Opening of the Everleigh Club

Prior to relocating to Chicago, the Everleigh sisters toured brothels in many cities, trying to find a location which had “plenty of wealthy men but no superior houses.” They were directed to Chicago by Cleo Maitland, a madam in Washington, D.C., who suggested they contact Effie Hankins in Chicago.

After buying Hankins’s brothel at 2131-2133 South Dearborn Street, they “fired all the women and completely redecorated the entire building with the most luxurious appointments available. Silk curtains, damask easy chairs, oriental rugs, mirrored ceilings, mahogany tables, gold rimmed china and silver dinnerware, perfumed fountains in every room, a $15,000 [equivalent to $369,205 in 2007] gold-leafed piano for the Music Room, mirrored ceilings, a library filled with finely bound volumes, an art gallery featuring nudes in gold frameso expense was spared. While the heavyweight boxer Jack Johnson thought the $57 gold spittoons in his caf were worth boasting about, the patrons of the Everleigh Club were obliged to expectorate in $650 gold cuspidors.” The Everleigh Club was described by Chicago’s Vice Commission as “probably the most famous and luxurious house of prostitution in the country.”

Prior to the opening of the Everleigh Club, Ada was responsible for recruiting talent for the club. She started by contacting her former employees in Omaha and spreading the word through brothels across the country. She conducted face-to-face interviews with all the applicants.

The brothel opened on February 1, 1900 with little fanfare, and turned away many of the clients who initially appeared because the Everleigh Sisters did not deem them suitable for the cliente they were seeking.

Once the club was open, Ada, who was quieter and more reserved than her sister, took on the responsibility of making sure the club was kept up to standards. She oversaw cleaning and renovations. Ada was also very much taken with the gold leaf piano in the Club and once claimed she rejected a suitor because he disapproved of the piano.

The club’s heyday

The clientele of the Everleigh House included captains of industry, important politicians and…(and so on)

Plot

George shows off the new key ring that George Steinbrenner has given everyone in the Yankee organization, celebrating Phil Rizzuto’s induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame. However, George loses his new key chain. George theorizes that he may have lost his keys when he did a broad jump over a pothole that has now been paved over. George, unwilling to pay the city maintenance crew, dons construction gear and takes a jackhammer to the pothole in order to reclaim his key chain.

Jerry accidentally knocks his girlfriend Jenna’s toothbrush into the toilet, and she uses it before he can tell her. Jerry plans to secretly sterilize his girlfriend’s mouth, but despite his attempts, he just can’t get past the vision of the toothbrush in the toilet. Jenna finds out about the toothbrush and sticks something of Jerry’s in his toilet, refusing to tell him what it is. Jerry throws out nearly everything he owns, suspecting that anything could have gone in the toilet; he finally learns that the mystery item was nothing more than his toilet brush. Digging for his Phil Rizzuto keychain, George accidentally strikes a water main while digging up the road, causing an eruption that sends water bursting out of Jenna’s toilet, soaking her.

Elaine tries to order a new Chinese dish, Supreme Flounder, but she lives across the street from the boundary of the Chinese restaurant’s delivery area. Elaine schemes to get her Chinese food by moving into a janitor’s closet, located in the building across the street. The building’s superintendent believes her to actually be the janitor and pesters her about the maintenance that needs to be done. Elaine has the gang over for dinner in the janitor closet she’s moved into temporarily. Elaine, still acting as the janitor in order to allay any suspicion, brings the building’s garbage to the dump in Jerry’s car, swerving all over Kramer’s luxurious two-lane highway and unknowingly dropping an old Singer sewing machine on the road. Newman drives by in his mail truck, delivering crates of fish. His truck catches Elaine’s sewing machine and drags it along the highway, sending up sparks that ignite Kramer’s paint thinner and cause his truck to go up in flames.

Kramer complains about the failing highway infrastructure after running over an abandoned sewing machine, so he adopts a one-mile piece of the Arthur Burghardt Expressway through the Adopt a Highway program. Kramer works diligently to keep his part of the road clean, not trusting the work to the city’s maintenance crew. Kramer repaints the four-lane highway, intending to make it a more luxurious two-laner, but his efforts only result in mass confusion and congestion on behalf of the drivers. Kramer attempts to return the highway to its original state, but spills paint thinner all over the pavement.

Trivia

Jerry Seinfeld, in an appearance on The Tonight Show the night before the episode aired, declared “The Pothole” to be one of the best episodes of the series.

This episode earned Andy Ackerman an Emmy Award for Outstanding Direction.

The “Arthur Burghardt Expressway” is not a real road.

Jerry’s girlfriend (Jenna) is played by Kristin Davis of HBO’s Sex and the City.

Newman sings Three Times a Lady by The Commodores before his truck goes up in flames.

Newman says “Oh, the humanity!” when his truck goes up in flames, referring to Herbert Morrison’s recorded description of the Hindenburg disaster.

In The Hot Tub, Kramer claims not to use an alarm clock (or even trust them), claiming that one’s body knows the correct time. However, in this episode, an alarm clock is seen (& heard) in use in his bedroom.

Filigree (formerly written filigrann or filigrane; also known as telkari, the name given in Anatolia, meaning “wire work”, and cift-isi, pronounced chift-ishi, meaning “tweezers work”) is a jewel work of a delicate kind made with twisted threads usually of gold and silver or stitching of the same curvy motif. It oftens suggests lace, and is most popular in French fashion decoration from 1660 to the present. It is now exceedingly common for ajoure jewellery work to be mislabelled as filigree. While both have many open areas, filigree involves threads being soldered together to form an object and ajoure involves holes being punched, drilled, or cut through an existing piece of metal.

The word, which is usually derived from the Latin filum, thread, and granum, grain, is not found in Ducange, and is indeed of modern origin. According to Prof. Skeat it is derived from the Spanish filigrana, from “filar”, to spin, and grano, the grain or principal fibre of the material.

History

Though filigree has become a special branch of jewel work in modern times, it was anciently part of the ordinary work of the jeweler. A. Castellani states, in his “Memoir on the Jewellery of the Ancients” (1861), that all the jewelry of the Etruscans and Greeks (other than that intended for the grave, and therefore of an unsubstantial character) was made by soldering together and so building up the gold rather than by chiselling or engraving the material.

Ancient work

The Egyptian jewelers employed wire, both to lay down on a background and to plait or otherwise arrange d jour. But, with the exception of chains, it cannot be said that filigree work was much practiced by them. Their strength lay rather in their cloisonnes work and their molded ornaments. Many examples, however, remain of round plaited gold chains of fine wire, such as are still made by the filigree workers of India, and known as trichinopoly chains. From some of these are hung smaller chains of finer wire with minute fishes and other pendants fastened to them.

In ornaments derived from Phoenician sites, such as Cyprus and Sardinia, patterns of gold wire are laid down with great delicacy on a gold ground, but the art was advanced to its highest perfection in the Greek and Etruscan filigree of the 6th to the 3rd centuries BC. A number of earrings and other personal ornaments found in central Italy are preserved in the Louvre and in the British Museum. Almost all of them are made of filigree work. Some earrings are in the form of flowers of geometric design, bordered by one or more rims each made up of minute volutes of gold wire, and this kind of ornament is varied by slight differences in the way of disposing the number or arrangement of the volutes. But the feathers and petals of modern Italian filigree are not seen in these ancient designs. Instances occur, but only rarely, in which filigree devices in wire are self-supporting and not applied to metal plates.

The museum of the Hermitage at Saint Petersburg contains an amazingly rich collection of jewelry from the tombs of the Crimea. Many bracelets and necklaces in that collection are made of twisted wire, some in as many as seven rows of plaiting, with clasps in the shape of heads of animals of beaten work. Others are strings of large beads of gold, decorated with volutes, knots and other patterns of wire soldered over the surfaces. In the British Museum a sceptre, probably that of a Greek priestess, is covered with plaited and netted gold wipe, finished with a sort of Corinthian capital and a boss of green glass.

Asia

It is probable that in India and various parts of central Asia filigree has been worked from the most remote period without any change in the designs. Whether the Asiatic jewellers were influenced by the Greeks settled on that continent, or merely trained under traditions held in common with them, it is certain that the Indian filigree workers retain the same patterns as those of the ancient Greeks, and work them in the same way, down to the present day. Wandering workmen are given so much gold, coined or rough, which is weighed, heated in a pan of charcoal, beaten into wire, and then worked in the courtyard or verandah of the employer’s house according to the designs of the artist, who weighs the complete work on restoring it and is paid at a specified rate for his labour. Very fine grains or beads and spines of gold, scarcely thicker than coarse hair, projecting from plates of gold are methods of ornamentation still used.

TRACON and TRACON II are game software programs that simulate an air traffic control environment on a personal computer. The games were originally sold by Texas-based Wesson International as an offshoot to their line of professional air traffic control simulation products. Wesson was purchased by Adacel.

Over its life, the software has evolved from a DOS to a Microsoft Windows environment. It included graphics that simulate a TRACON air traffic controller’s situation. At periodic screen updates, aircraft icons move slowly across the controller’s sector. The player sees an aircraft icon with its identifier (AA34) and the aircraft’s altitude or flight level (110).

The game familiarizes a player with the difficulty of tracking many events simultaneously. Every aircraft is moving in a dynamic environment. The player must develop a feel for three-dimensional space represented in two dimensions on the screen. Generally, aircraft must be kept separated by 1,000 vertical feet and three miles horizontal separation. A series of alarms sound if adequate space between aircraft is not maintained. A few separation conflicts can quickly wipe out the player’s entire accrued point value. The closer aircraft get, the more severe the warnings. A mid-air crash ends the game.

There are two ways to run ATC simulation scenarios: a) random ones created by the program itself , or b) your own ones which you may edit with a simple text editor (filkes extension *.sim), following all the syntax rules and geographical sector details .

In case (a) the player selects traffic density to control (aircraft / time) and one from the available geographical sectors and then the game issues random start and end points within this sector at random altitudes and activation times. It juggles aircraft types, some being commercial airline traffic while others are slow-moving general aviation aircraft. Each game sees a different mix of aircraft, callsigns, start- and end-points, unless the user elects to “repeat the last simulation.” Aircraft types have profiles: an airliner might cruise at 250 knots while general aviation craft may cruise as slowly as 90 knots. The player can slow an airliner to 170 knots in order to space aircraft in an approach pattern. If the aircraft is ordered to fly below its minimum speed, the game says, “That’s below my minimum.” Aircraft identify as heavy where appropriate. Flight plans can either transit a sector or involve takeoffs and landings. Users receive point credit for successfully getting aircraft through their respective flight plans. Points are continually deducted for each command issued to a pilot and for time delays. Shorter flights mean higher point counts. Each turn or change in speed the player orders costs points.

Aircraft arriving at the edge of the player’s TRACON will call. “AA34 with you at one one thousand,” the status line will display this in text, voice of the calling pilot will play, and the icon will persistently flash. If ignored, the aircraft will circle and hold at the radio fix identified as the beginning-point in the player’s sector.

In case (b) the player selects his own simulation (*.sim) file to run and the scenario unfolds exactly as described by the designer. In this case the possibilities to use TRACON II as a more realistic ATC simulator are many, adding to it the fact that a user may also design his entirely own airspace-sectors (file extension *.sec) to work with. Thus a large number of fans all over the world appeared offering sectors and simulation files well beyond the standard ones coming with this package. There are of course some limitations. The maximum altitude one may use is retsricted by the maximum binary number (8bit) used in this program to below 31000 feet which , however , is enough for Terminal Area Control , alhtough insufficient for higher airspaces. The aircraft performance can be varied but not with all necessary parameters , although still almost realistic for aircraft approaching - departing aerodromes at below 10000 feet. The sector creation needs careful design for its syntax but it is otherwise simple. The positioning on points demands a conversion of geographical coordinates to a X,Y grid centered around a point selected by the user which is allocated the 0,0 coordinates.

Plenty of explanations for the syntax and files details were provided with the initial version.

Oba Chandler (born October 11, 1946 in Cincinnati, Ohio) is a rapist and convicted murderer currently on death row in Florida for the 1989 triple-murders of a woman and her two daughters in Tampa Bay, Florida. All three of the women were found floating in Tampa Bay in June, 1989, with their hands and feet bound, cement blocks tied to their necks, and duct tape over their mouths. Autopsies indicated the women had been thrown into the water one by one while still alive. Chandler also remains a suspect in a 1982 murder of a woman found floating off Anna Maria Island.

The case became historic as the police used billboards with information and photos of the victims, spreading them all over Tampa in an attempt to find more information about the killer. This method had never been used before, and became useful in searches for missing people later on. Chandler is currently incarcerated at Union Correctional Institution in Florida.

Chandler was working as an aluminium building contractor prior to arrest, and against the advice of his attorneys, testified in his own defense. He admitted that he had met the Ohio women and had given them directions, but claimed he never saw them again except in the newspaper and on the billboards set up by investigators. Investigators originally theorized that there were two men involved in the murders of the Rogers women. This theory was reflected in an episode of the television show Unsolved Mysteries, in a re-enactment of the crime showing two men leaving the dock with the three women on board a boat. Most people involved with the investigation are today certain that Chandler acted on his own when killing the three Ohio women, even though some have stated concerns over the probability that one man could kill a family of three without any help from a second assailant.

Background

Early life

Chandler was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio approximately 100 miles from where the Rogers where living, Oba Chandler was the fourth child in a family of five children. His parents where Oba Chandler Sr. and Margaret Johnson, when Chandler was only 10 years old his father hanged himself in the basement of the family’s apartment. Chandlers fathers death effected him so mutch that he jumped into the open grave as the gravediggers were covering the coffin with dirt at his fathers funeral on June 1, 1957. After that Chandlers life spun out of control and he was stealing cars by age 14 and was arrested 20 times while he was a juvenile. As an adult, he was charged with a long list of crimes, including possession of counterfeit money, loitering and prowling, burglary, kidnapping and armed robbery. Once he was accused of masturbating while peering inside a woman’s window; another time, with receiving 21 wigs stolen from a beauty parlor. On another occasion, Chandler and an accomplice broke into the home of a Florida couple and held them at gunpoint while robbing them. Chandler told his accomplice to tie up the man with speaker wire and then took the woman into the bedroom, where he made her strip to her underwear and tied her up, too. While she lay on the bed, he rubbed the barrel of his revolver across the woman’s stomach. Chandler would also father a total of eight children, the latest one being Whitney born in February, 1989.

Facts leading up to the crime

Joan (“Jo”) Rogers, 36, and her daughters, Michelle (17) and Christe (14) left their family dairy farm on May 26, 1989 in Willshire for a vacation in Florida. They had never before left the state of Ohio.

Speculation of crime itself

On June 1, 1989, while heading home, authorities believe the women became lost and encountered Chandler, who gave them directions and offered to meet them again later to take them on a sunset cruise of Tampa Bay. It is known that the Rogers women left Orlando that morning around 9 a.m. and checked into the Days Inn (motel) on State Route 60 at 12:30 p.m. Snapshots recovered from a camera left in their car showed the last picture of Michelle while she was alive and even the sun…(and so on)
