YMCA Camp Tecumseh Outdoor Center is located in Indiana near the towns of Brookston, Indiana and Delphi, Indiana on the Tippecanoe River. The closest large city to Camp Tecumseh is Lafayette, Indiana, which is also home to Purdue University. Camp Tecumseh was established in 1924 when citizens of Delphi raised $3000 to purchase the land which lies on a bend on the Tippecanoe river. The camp is named after Tecumseh, a Shawnee chief. Camp Tecumseh is fully accredited by the American Camping Association and currently serves over 4,000 campers every summer from throughout the midwest USA and the world. Camp Tecumseh is also open throughout the year, providing an Outdoor Education service for schools and a facility for Retreats and Conferences of all kinds. The facility serves over 30,000 people per year. It is an independent YMCA branch and is operated independently of other metro YMCAs.

History

In 1922, the YMCA of Indiana wanted to establish camps in Indiana. Most YMCAs in the state were too small to host a camp on their own, so regional camps, combining the resources of several YMCAs were pursued as the solution. They YMCA of Indiana raised funds for property in southern part of the state near Bedford, Indiana. The fund drive a success, netting the over $20,000 needed to establish their first State YMCA camp, Camp Bedford in 1923.

The success of the Camp Bedford campaign encouraged a drive for a YMCA State Camp to placed in Northern Indiana. The citizens of Delphi, Indiana presented a petition the YMCA of Indiana asking that the camp be placed at a Carroll county site located on the Tippecanoe river, one of many sites under consideration for the new Northern Indiana State camp. The owner of the proposed site was J. Reid McCain, a local farmer, who promised to sell the 30 acres for $3,000 for the camping site. The YMCA of Indiana the pledged that if Delphi could provide the $3,000 for the land, keep a good road to the camp, and insure a “friendly attitude” towards the camp that they would agree to the Carroll county site for the new camp. In a burst of activity and a one day fund drive, the citizens of Delphi provided a total of $3,775 for purchase of the land.

The new Northern Indiana State Camp to be founded on the Tippecanoe River was not yet named, so a “name-the-camp” contest was conducted by the YMCA of Indiana. The grand prize was a free two-week stay at the new camp. Jack Fisher, an 11-year-old from Battle Ground, Indiana submitted “Camp Tecumseh,” a name closely associated with the local history, which includes the Battle of Tippecanoe. Fisher’s contribution won the contest and he attended the first session of camp held in 1924.

Girls camps have always been included at Camp Tecumseh. Camp sessions in 1924 included two 10-day sessions for girls and three for boys. In 1965, separate sessions ended following the national YMCA’s push for co-educational camping.

Camp Tecumseh has also closely allied itself with other youth organizations from the early days, and 1924 included a “Week for Agricultural Clubs” which became known as “4-H Camp.” This camp continues yearly to the present day.

In 1924 cabins were not complete, and campers stayed in tents. Early Camp Tecumseh cabins were wood frames with canvas roofs and canvas sides. Eventually the canvas was replaced by wooden shutters, but the same basic cabin structures were used until they were replaced in 1979. One of these old cabins remains on the camp grounds as a historical monument.

All waterfront activities were held in the Tippecanoe river until 1950, when concerns over pollution and possible infections to campers prompted a drive to build a pool. The main donor for the pool was then President of the Camp Committee, Joe Shirk. The pool, along with an additional pool added in 19?? remain in use today. In 1991, Camp Tecumseh held a fund drive to build a man made lake. Karl and Marietta Kettelhut gladly met this request by providing 95% of the donations. They differed the name of the lake to Camp Director Don Marsh because he had been so instrumental in the formation of Camp Tecumseh. There is now a chappel above the lake to thank the Kettelhutts for their controbution. The lake allowed campers to once again swim in a “natural” body of water, and is a camper favorite.

In 1968, the Illinois and Indiana YMCAs merged to become the new Region I of the YMCA of the USA. With this change many involved in the operations of Camp Tecumseh felt that they no longer wanted to have to rely on YMCA hierarchy for the support of camp they needed. Much of the facility was out of shape and at various points during the 1960s board members feared that Tecumseh would be shut down by the YMCA of Indiana due to financial difficulties. The next logical step for the Camp Tecumseh was to become an independent YMCA. On October 16, 1970, Camp Tecumseh requested Independent YMCA status and it was granted by the YMCA of…(and so on)

Robb Flynn (born Lawrence Matthew Cardine, adopted, July 19, 1968, Oakland, California) ) is best known as the lead vocalist and guitarist for the highly influential thrash metal/groove metal band Machine Head. Robb formed the band along with Adam Duce, Logan Mader and Tony Costanza after leaving Bay Area thrash band Vio-Lence.

Flynn also formed the thrash metal band Forbidden (originally Forbidden Evil), while in his graduating year at American High School (Fremont, California). He played in this band from 1985 to 1987. He wrote 4 songs which appeared on their debut album, “Chalice Of Blood”, “Forbidden Evil”, “As Good As Dead” and part of “March Into Fire”, but left before an album was released to join local thrash metal rivals Vio-Lence, alongside present Machine Head guitarist Phil Demmel.

In January 2005 he was selected as one of the 4 “team captains” of Roadrunner United, an act to celebrate Roadrunner’s 25 year anniversary. Flynn wrote, produced and recorded guitar on 4 songs, and sang a duet with Howard Jones of Killswitch Engage on one song “The Dagger”. He wrote and played guitar on “The Rich Man”, “Independent (Voice Of The Voiceless)”, and “Army Of The Sun”

On 11 June 2007, Robb Flynn received the Metal Hammer 2007 Golden God Award.

Machine Head’s current release “The Blackening” has climbed on #54 of the US Billboard after only 2 weeks of being released, and was nominated for a Grammy, being by far the band’s most successful album. Robb himself produced this album and its predecessor, “Through the Ashes of Empires”.

Flynn will appear in the new Roadrunner DVD entitled “Roadrunner United:The Concert”, a DVD featuring members of core Roadrunner bands: Machine Head, Slipknot, Sepultura, Killswitch Engange and many more. Flynn’s performance in Slipknot’s “Surfacing” along with Andreas Kisser - lead guitar, Dino Cazares - rhythm guitar, Adam Duce - bass and Roy Mayorga - drums will be included in the upcoming DVD.

The Lancaster Barnstormers are a professional baseball team based in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in the United States. They are a member of the Freedom Division of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, which is not affiliated with Major League Baseball. From the 2005 season to the present, the Barnstormers have played their home games at Clipper Magazine Stadium, in the city’s Northwest Corridor. With 8,485 fans attending their 2008 opening day, the team owns the Atlantic League single-game attendance record.

The Barnstormers represent all Lancaster County, even though they play in the city of Lancaster. The team designates many of its home games to honor the county’s smaller communities.

Baseball fans in Lancaster waited 44 years for the sport to return after the Lancaster Red Roses folded following the 1961 season. In 2003, Lancastrians chose the name “Barnstormers” in a name-the-team contest. The name refers to the act of barnstorming, which means to travel around an area appearing in exhibition sports events, especially baseball games. It was used to describe Lancaster’s baseball teams as far back as 1906 by the Lancaster Daily Intelligencer: “There was a crowd of between seven and eight hundred persons out on Friday to see the Lancaster barnstormers play the Philadelphia Giants.” The team’s primary logo was designed with local history in mind, as the team colors of red, navy blue, and khaki were the same as those used by the former Red Roses. The name and logo also allude to Lancaster County’s agricultural heritage, notable for its inclusion of Amish culture and lore. The Barnstormers organization lightheartedly calls its market the “Pennsylvania Clutch Country”, referring to Lancaster’s location in the Pennsylvania Dutch Country and the sports jargon, clutch.

History of Lancaster baseball

The beginning

Baseball first came to Lancaster County in the 1860s by soldiers returning home from the Civil War. They learned the rules while serving in the military and wanted to continue playing. The very first professional baseball teams in Lancaster were the Lancaster Lancasters and the Lancaster Ironsides. The Lancasters played in the Keystone Association while the Ironsides played in the Eastern League, both starting in 1884. The following season, the Lancasters joined the Eastern League, and the two teams became bitter rivals. They competed against each other for fan support, league affiliation, and money at the gate. At its peak, insults and refusals to play against each other were the norm. The teams finally agreed to play each other at the end of the 1884 season, in which the Ironsides defeated the Lancasters after seven very close games. The Lancasters were the only team to continue play in the next season.

The 1890s

In the 18941895 season, a team called the Lancaster Chicks played in the Keystone Association. An all-African-American team called the Lancaster Giants followed in 1887, and many Lancastrians supported the team despite the social pressure of the day. The Giants hosted many exhibition games against the Philadelphia Giants of the Keystone Club.

Between the years 1896 and 1899, the first team called the Lancaster Maroons played in the original Atlantic League. In 1905, the second inception of the Maroons played in the Tri-State League.

History

The city was badly damaged in 1979, due to flooding caused by morvi dam burst.

The prosperous city state of Morbi and much of the built heritage and town planning is attributed to the efficient administration of Sir Waghji, who came to the throne in 1879 and ruled till 1948. Sir Waghji acted as a ruler, manager, patron and policemen of the state with great authority, always keeping the citizens’ interests in mind. Sir Waghji, like other contemporary rulers of Saurashtra, built roads, Railway Network of seventy miles connecting Wadhvan and Morbi and two small ports of Navlakhi and vavania for exporting the state’s production of salt and cloth. The railway station of Morbi is a beautiful example of Railway architecture, combining Indian and European architectural elements.

Overview

The most important buildings at Morbi are: Darbargadh, Mani Mandir, Wellingdon Secretariat, Suspension Bridge, Art Deco Palace and Lakhdhirji Engineering College.

Darbargadh, on the bank of Machchu, is an original residence of Morbi rulers. It can be reached by crossing an imposing gate arcaded facade, Now it is the only heritage hotel at Morbi.

Mani Mandir is a temple situated in the courtyard of Wellingdon Secretariat. The images of Laxmi Narayan, Mahakali, Ramchandraji, Radha- Krishna and Shiva are worshiped in this temple. Mani Mandir is made out of Jaipur stone with excellent workmanship and exquisitely carved elements-arches, brackets, jalis, chhatris and shikhara. Wellingdon Secretariat is an excellent example of the application of principles of Rajput architecture by master craftsmen, at the turn of the century.

The Suspension Bridge, an engineering marvel built at the turn of the century, reflects the progressive and scientific nature of the rulers of Morbi. This was built to give a unique identity to Morbi using the latest technology available in those days in Europe. It is 1.25 metres wide and spans 233 metres on the Machchhu River connecting Darbargadh Palace and Lakhdhirji Engineering College. Recently this bridge has been renovated and opened up for tourists.

Green Chowk is a town square approached by series of three gates. European town planning principles inspired the creation of these gates as landmarks in the town. The Nehru Gate is made out of stone using elements of Rajput architecture with central clock tower, while another one uses elements of western architecture and is capped by a three-storey cast iron frame structure with a dome.

Art Deco Palace (19311944) is a marvellous example of influence of last phase of art deco movement of Europe. It is poetry in granite, a low two storey in banded horizontal fenestration, curves and bays, which resembles the London underground stations of Charles Holden. The palace has six drawing rooms, six dining rooms, and fourteen bedrooms. The decorated subterranean bedroom, with many erotic murals and a bathroom made from seashells are also noteworthy.

Lakhdhirji Engineering College is housed in Nazarbag Palace, a former residence of Morbi rulers. The other places worth visiting at Morbi are: V C High School, main Railway Station and Nazarbag Railway Station.

Dirk Gently (real name Svlad Cjelli, also known as Dirk Cjelli) is a fictional character created by Douglas Adams and featured in the books Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency and The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul. He is portrayed as a pudgy man who normally wears a heavy old light brown suit, red checked shirt with a green striped tie, long leather coat, red hat and thick metal-rimmed spectacles.

“Dirk Gently” is not the character’s real name; it is noted early on in the first book that it is a pseudonym for “Svlad Cjelli”. Dirk himself states that the name has a “Scottish dagger feel” to it.

Holistic detective

An illustration of Dirk Gently outside his office in Islington

Dirk bills himself as a “holistic detective” who makes use of “the fundamental interconnectedness of all things” to solve the whole crime, and find the whole person. This involves running up large expense accounts and then claiming that every item (such as needing to go to a tropical beach in the Bahamas for three weeks) was, due to the “fundamental interconnectedness of all things”, actually a vital part of the investigation. Challenged on this point in the first novel, he claims that he cannot in fairness be considered to have ripped anybody off, because none of his clients have paid him yet. He maintains an office at 33a Peckender St. N1 London, with telephone number 01-354 9112 (407-2882 in the advertising campaign for the book).

Gently has an odd facility for accurate assumptions, as every wild guess he makes turns out to be true. Once a student at St. Cedd’s College, Cambridge, he left in disgrace when he attempted to acquire money by selling exam papers for the upcoming tests. His fellow students were convinced that he had produced the papers under hypnosisn reality, he had simply studied previous papers and determined potential patterns in the questions. However when his papers turned out to be exactly the same as the real papers, to the very comma, he was arrested and sent to prison.

Portrayals

Dirk Gently was played by Michael Bywater in the 1992 TV documentary The South Bank Show, Scot Burklin in a 2006 production of the play “Dirk” and is played by Harry Enfield in the 2007 BBC Radio 4 adaptation.

Further appearance

Douglas Adams was working on a third Dirk Gently novel, The Salmon of Doubt, at the time of his death, but some of the ideas he developed were not really working within a Dirk Gently framework. Those ideas would have been salvaged, undergoing necessary changes on the way, and put into a sixth Hitchhiker’s book.

Traditionally, soups are classified into two broad groups: clear soups and thick soups. The established French classifications of clear soups are bouillon and consomm. Thick soups are classified depending upon the type of thickening agent used: purs are vegetable soups thickened with starch; bisques are made from purd shellfish or vegetables thickened with cream; cream soups may be thickened with bhamel sauce; and velout are thickened with eggs, butter and cream. Other ingredients commonly used to thicken soups and broths include rice, flour, and grain.

History

William-Adolphe Bouguereau Soup (1865)

One of the first types of soups can be dated to about 6000 BC. Boiling was not a common cooking technique until the invention of waterproof containers (which probably came in the form of pouches made of clay or animal skin) about 9,000 years ago.

The word soup originates from “sop”, a dish originally consisting of a soup or thick stew which was soaked up with pieces of bread. The modern meaning of sop has been limited to just the bread intended to be dipped.

The word restaurant was first used in France in the 16th century, to describe a highly concentrated, inexpensive soup, sold by street vendors called restaurer, that was advertised as an antidote to physical exhaustion. In 1765, a Parisian entrepreneur opened a shop specializing in restaurers. This prompted the use of the modern word restaurant to describe the shops.

In America, the first colonial cookbook was published by William Parks in Williamsburg, Virginia, in 1742, based on Eliza Smith’s The Compleat Housewife; or Accomplished Gentlewoman’s Companion and it included several recipes for soups and bisques. A 1772 cookbook, The Frugal Housewife, contained an entire chapter on the topic. English cooking dominated early colonial cooking; but as new immigrants arrived from other countries, other national soups gained popularity. In particular, German immigrants living in Pennsylvania were famous for their potato soups. In 1794, Jean Baptiste Gilbert Payplat dis Julien, a refugee from the French Revolution, opened an eating establishment in Boston called Restorator, and became known as “The Prince of Soups.” The first American cooking pamphlet dedicated to soup recipes was written in 1882 by Emma Ewing: Soups and Soup Making.

Portable soup was devised in the 18th century by boiling seasoned meat until a thick, resinous syrup was left that could be dried and stored for months at a time. The Japanese miso is an example of a concentrated soup paste.

Commercial soup

Packets of soup

Commercial soup became popular with the invention of canning in the 19th century, and today a great variety of canned and dried soups are on the market. Dr. John T. Dorrance, a chemist with the Campbell Soup Company invented condensed soup in 1897. Today, Campbell’s Tomato, Cream of Mushroom and Chicken Noodle soups are three of the most popular soups in America. Americans consume approximately 2.5 billion bowls of these three soups alone each year. Canned Italian-style soups, such as minestrone are also popular.

Canned soup can be condensed, in which case it is prepared by adding water (or sometimes milk), or it can be ready-to-eat, meaning that it only needs to be warmed. Canned soup can be prepared by heating in a pan or in the microwave. The soups are often used as a simple base for homemade soups, with the consumer adding anything from a few vegetables to eggs, cream and pasta.

Condensing soup allows it to be packed into a smaller can and sold at a lower price than other canned soups. The soup is usually doubled in volume by adding “a can full” of water or milk (about 10 ounces).

In recent years, the canned soup market has exploded with so-called “ready-to-eat” soups, which require no additional water to make. Microwaveable bowls have expanded the ready-to-eat canned soup market even more. The plastic microwaveable bowls offer convenience in the workplace and are popular lunch items.

Oriental-style soup mixes containing ramen noodles are marketed as an inexpensive instant lunch, requiring only hot water for preparation. Vegetable, chicken base, potato, pasta and cheese soups are also available in dry mix form, ready to be served by adding hot water.

(Redirected from Potability of backcountry water)

Diarrhea from pathogens acquired in the wilderness is sometimes called wilderness-acquired diarrhea (WAD), wilderness diarrhea (WD), or backcountry diarrhea, and is a much-discussed hazard among backpackers, hikers, campers and other outdoor recreationalists who visit wilderness areas in temperate climates of the developed world. Risk factors include drinking untreated surface water and insufficient washing of hands and food utensils, i.e. insufficient hygiene, which may result in person to person transmission of microbes that cause WAD. Some people may be carriers and not exhibit symptoms. Cases of WAD tend to be self-limited and the specific cause (microbe) is most often never known. Some medical and public health researchers believe that the risks of WAD have been over-stated and are poorly understood by the public.

Names and definitions

Diarrhea acquired in the wilderness/desert area is typically a form of infectious diarrhea, itself classified as a type of secretory diarrhea. These are all considered forms of gastroenteritis. The term may be applied in various remote areas of non-tropical developed countries (U.S., Canada, western Europe, etc.), but is less applicable in developing countries, and in the tropics, because of the different pathogens that are most likely to cause infection.

Causes

Infectious diarrhea acquired in the wilderness is caused by various bacteria, viruses, protozoa and other parasitic organisms. The most commonly reported are the protozoa Giardia and Cryptosporidium. Other infectious agents may play a larger role than generally believed and include Campylobacter, hepatitis A virus, hepatitis E virus, enterotoxogenic E. coli, e. coli 0157:H7, Shigella, and various viruses. More rarely, Yersinia enterocolitica, Aeromonas hydrophila, and Cyanobacterium may also cause disease. Modes of acquiring infection from these causes are limited to fecal-oral transmission, and contaminated water and food. The major factor governing pathogen content of surface water is human and animal activity in the watershed.

Giardia lamblia does not tolerate freezing but can remain viable for nearly three months in river water when the temperature is 10 and about one month at 1520 in lake water. Cryptosporidium may survive in cold waters (4) for up to 18 months, and can even withstand freezing, although its viability is thereby greatly reduced. Many other varieties of diarrhea-causing organisms, including Shigella and Salmonella typhi, and hepatitis A virus, can survive freezing for weeks to months. Virologists believe all surface water in the United States and Canada has the potential to contain human viruses, which cause a wide range of illnesses including diarrhea, polio and meningitis.

Symptoms

The average incubation periods for giardiasis and cryptosporidiosis are each 7 days. Certain other bacterial and viral agents have shorter incubation periods, although hepatitis may take weeks to manifest itself. The onset usually occurs within the first week of return from the field, but may also occur at any time while hiking.

Most cases begin abruptly and usually result in increased frequency, volume, and weight of stool. Typically, a hiker experiences at least four to five loose or watery bowel movements each day. Other commonly associated symptoms are nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramping, bloating, low fever, urgency, and malaise, and usually the appetite is affected. The condition is much more serious if there is blood or mucus in stools, abdominal pain, or high fever. Dehydration is a possibility. Life-threatening illness resulting from WAD is extremely rare but can occur in people with weakened immune systems.

Diagnosis

It may be difficult to associate a particular case of diarrhea with a recent wilderness trip of a few days because incubation of the disease may outlast the trip. Studies of trips that are much longer than the average incubation period, e.g. a week for Cryptosporidium and Giardia, are less susceptible to these errors since there is enough time for the diarrhea to occur during the trip. Other bacterial and viral agents have shorter incubation periods, although hepatitis may require weeks.

A suspected case of wilderness diarrhea may be assessed within the general context of intestinal complaints. During any given four-week period, as many as 7.2% of Americans may experience some form of infectious or non-infectious diarrhea. There are an estimated 99 million annual cases of intestinal infectious…(and so on)
