T-Bag is a witch-like character who appears in a number of television programmes which ran from the mid-80s to early 90s on Children’s ITV. Written by Grant Cathro and Lee Pressman, each series has a different title and features a single story told over several episodes.

From 1985 to 1989, the original T-Bag is Tallulah Bag, played by Elizabeth Estensen. In 1990, Elizabeth Estensen left the show and Tallulah was destroyed attempting to kill T-Shirt and Sally Simpkins with a spell which they reflected back onto her. She was subsequently replaced by her sister, Tabatha Bag, played by Georgina Hale. Coincidentally both actresses subsequently had roles on the ITV soap Emmerdale.

Both sisters obtain magical powers by drinking tea made from the ‘High T-Plant’ and both are incapable of brewing it properly themselves and require an assistant or ‘Tea Caddy’ to do it for them. In return for his help, T-Bag shares her magical powers with her assistant T-Shirt and he serves as her sidekick. T-Shirt (Thomas Shirt) is played by John Hasler throughout the series, starting as a small child in the early series, and growing up on screen until he towered above Georgina Hale by the time the final series ended in 1992. In the early episodes, he worked in a toy shop and was re-acquired by T-Bag in the first episode of each series. In later episodes, however, the toy shop, and references to T-Shirt’s supposed normal human life between series, were dropped, and T-Shirt is presented as T-Bag’s constant companion, part harassed surrogate son, part household servant.

T-Bag and T-Shirt’s magical powers, (rather limited, owing to cheap 1980’s special effects) mostly consist of conjuring objects out of thin air when needed, sending objects elsewhere and teleporting across time and space instantaneously. T-Bag triggers her teleport ability by clicking her fingers, T-Shirt finds finger clicking too difficult and blinks instead.

Sally Simkins

The premise of each series involves various items hidden across time and space with T-Bag and the heroine both trying to find them. Debbie Carter, played by Jennie Stallwood is the heroine of the first three series. Diana Barrand took over for series four as child television presenter; Holly Anna Jones. Kellie Bright, who later appeared in The Upper Hand and The Archers, played Sally Simpkins in series five and six plus a Christmas special. In T-Bag and the Rings of Olympus, the heroine is the Goddess Athena’s handmaiden, Polyzena, or Polly, played by Natalie Wood. In T-Bag and the Sunstones of Montezuma, Archeologist’s daughter; Penny Hunt is played by Evelyn Sweeney. Typically, each episode also features two non-regular cast members to progress the story.

The scattered items are either needed by the heroine in order to defeat T-Bag or are needed by T-Bag in order to carry out some evil plan to take over the world and are scattered across time and space in the first episode of each series to prevent T-Bag from acquiring them. Each episode then consists of the contest between T-Bag and T-Shirt on one side, and the girl on the other, to acquire one of the magical items.

Each episode has a different setting in which the magical item is hidden, usually either historical periods; such as ancient Egypt, ancient Rome, Renaissance Italy or Elizabethan England. Or settings from folklore or literature; Tom Sawyer’s American South, Robin Hood’s Sherwood Forest, or a French Foreign Legion station in North Africa which owes something to Beau Geste. Sometimes historical figures such as Napoleon, Leonardo da Vinci or Queen Elizabeth I make a guest appearance. Thus, there is an educational element to the show, although these settings and characters are always treated lightly rather than with great accuracy.

The early series were loosely based upon the good vs. evil theme, Tallulah being the more sinister of the sisters. Typically, the final episode features a return to the setting of the first episode, the magical items re-united, a last minute struggle over the possession of them; often with T-Bag briefly gaining possession through trickery and T-Bag’s defeat by the girl; often with the aid of T-Shirt, who tends to switch sides. The comic aspects are usually dropped and T-Bag becomes a much more sinister character as she seems on the point of achieving her dreams of world domination, only to be thwarted at the last minute.

The later series were designed to have a lighter tone. Tabatha; a ridiculously…(and so on)

A U.S. Navy Seaman uses a needle-gun to remove old paint and corrosion aboard USS Kitty Hawk.[1]

A needlegun scaler or needle-gun is a tool used in metalwork applications as diverse as home repair, automotive repair and shipboard preservation.[2][3][4] The tool is used to remove rust, scale, and old paint from metal surfaces.[5]

Operation and use

A needle gun has a set of very fine chisels known as needles.[2] The tool forces these needles against a work surface at variable speeds up to around 5,000 times per minute.[2][5] Different models offer choices of number of needles, operating speed, and power levels.[2] Many models use compressed air, although electrical needle-guns do exist.[2][6]

In a pneumatic unit, compressed air forces a piston forwards and backwards.[2] This movement causes the needles to move back and forth against the work surface.[2]

An able seaman uses a needlegun to remove scale while refurbishing a mooring winch.

The needle gun has advantages over other scaling tools. Its main advantage is that the needles automatically adjust themselves to contours, making the tool a good choice for cleaning irregular surfaces.[5] A needle gun can clean an area to bare metal in seconds, and compares well to other scaling tools in terms of accuracy and precision.[2]

It’s recommended that before needlegunning, a surface be prepared by removing oil, grease, dirt, chemicals and water-soluble contaminants.[4] This can be done with solvents or with a combination of detergent and fresh water.[4]

Then, the needle gun is used to remove rust, loose mill scale and paint, leaving bare metal.[4] It is used most effectively by holding it at a 90 angle to the work surface.[4] It is recommended that an area no larger than six to eight inches be cleared at once.[4] Two to three passes over an area is generally sufficient to clean it.[4] Then the process is repeated until the desired area is completed.[4]

Prior to painting, it’s desirable to feather any edges between metal and old paint. [4] It’s also important to check the surface for oil deposited during chipping, and if necessary, clean the area with solvents. [4] Since bare metal surfaces will flash rust soon after exposure to the atmosphere, paint should be applied as soon as possible after chipping.[4] If flash rusting occurs prior to coating, further chipping, cleaning and sanding may be necessary.[4]

The Peddie School is a preparatory school in Hightstown, New Jersey, United States.

It is a highly selective, nondenominational, coeducational boarding school located on a 280?acre (1.1-km2) campus, and serves students in the ninth through twelfth grades, plus continuing education.

It was founded as a Baptist school, The Hightstown Female Seminary, in 1864, but later that year, boys were admitted, and it changed its name for the first time. In 1872, it became the Peddie School in honor of philanthropist and politician Thomas B. Peddie, who gave the school US$25,000.

Peddie remained coeducational until 1908, when, for social and economic reasons, it decided to admit boys only. This was reversed in the early 1970s, and girls were readmitted. As of March 2007, 21 states, the District of Columbia, and 22 foreign countries were represented among the student body[citation needed].

In 1993, former Ambassador Walter Annenberg (Class of 1927) gave US$100 million to Peddie, the largest donation ever made to a U.S. secondary school at the time, and unsurpassed until 2007 (by a US$128-million donation to the George School).[1] In 2006, an anonymous donor gave US$20 million to Peddie, the second-largest donation in the school’s history. At April 2007, Boarding School Review reported that the school has an endowment of over US$390 million, one of the largest among preparatory schools in the United States.[2]

Academics

The academic year is divided into three terms, the first two focusing on a rigorous core curriculum. During the third term, besides mathematics and certain required science courses, students may choose electives.

The Advanced Placement Program offers courses in AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Physics C, AP European History, AP United States History, AP French Language, AP Spanish Language, AP Latin Literature, AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, AP Statistics, AP Psychology, AP Computer Science, AP Art History, AP Music Theory, AP Studio Art and AP Chinese Language and Culture. An Independent Study Program provides students with the opportunity to study a specialized subject in depth[citation needed].

Peddie also offers the opportunity for juniors to participate in a program called “Summer Signature Experiences”, allowing a select group of students to spend three to six weeks (of the summer before their senior year) to pursue their passions and doing research on a particular subject of interest. When they return to school, each participant writes a formal paper and gives a 30-minute public presentation describing the experience.[3] Examples of previous research topics include: experiencing first-hand the Italian Renaissance architectural philosophy in Rome, Italy and Florence, Italy; discovering underwater archaeology on the Greek island of Paros; interviewing African heads of state and tribal chiefs about democracy; and studying flamenco dancing in Seville, Spain.

Athletics

All students must participate in theater, on an interscholastic team, or in one of the elective physical-education classes after school.

The Ian H. Graham Athletic Center houses a swimming pool and separate diving tank; three basketball, volleyball, and tennis courts (surrounded by an indoor Tartan track); a wrestling room; an indoor soccer and lacrosse facility with Astroturf, a 2,000-square-foot (190-m2) fitness center with state-of-the-art equipment; a room housing eight ergometers; and a fully equipped 6-bed training room and sports-medicine center. Outdoor facilities include fourteen tennis courts, eight multipurpose fields, a specially equipped varsity football and lacrosse training field, a softball field, an Olympic-caliber ?-mile all-weather track, a varsity football and lacrosse field, three baseball fields. A recent addition, the Hovnanian Fields, added another six fields, dedicated seasonally to the freshmen and junior varsity soccer and lacrosse teams.

The Athletic Center holds a replica of the Heisman Trophy donated to the school by Yale University lineman Larry Kelley (Peddie class of 1933), who won it in 1936, the second year in which…(and so on)

Hanon H?sh? (?? ?? ,H?sh? Hanon?) Voiced by: Hitomi Terakado is one of the central characters in the anime and manga series Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch and its second anime season, Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch Pure. She is the Mermaid Princess of the South Atlantic Ocean and keeper of the Aquamarine Pearl. Hanon is very feminine and flirty. She loves to shop and apply makeup. Her idol form is ‘Mizuiro (Aqua) Pearl Voice’. She has two songs from both seasons of the anime, Ever Blue and Mizuiro no Senritsu. Her seiyu, Hitomi Terakado, was only 14 years old when she voiced her.

Hanon, unlike Lucia, came onto land to escape from water demons. They destroyed her kingdom, and the mermaids that had been living in it fled.

Hanon first meets Lucia at school, in episode one of the anime, where they become best friends. Hanon falls for their music teacher, Tar? Mitsuki. She adoringly refers to him as “Tar?-chan”.

Towards the end of the first anime season, it is revealed that Sara once loved Mitsuki in the past. He desperately tries to get Sara to understand the reason he left her. Hanon is very sad, but understands that Mitsuki loves Sara and decides to help Mitsuki tell the truth to Sara.

Later, after Gaito is sealed back in his castle, Mitsuki decides to fly to Germany to study music. Before he leaves, he gives Hanon a composition by him, titled ‘Mizuiro no Senritsu’ (Aquamarine Melody), making Hanon happy as can be. She accidentally leaves the music there, but Shirai Nagisa finds it at the airport. Nagisa quickly falls head over heels in love with Hanon, but she initially dismisses his feelings as something immature. As the series progresses, Hanon eventually reciprocates his crush on her.

Aspects And Forms

Hanon in her Mizuiro Pearl Voice form super idol.

Hanon in her first idol form, Mizuiro Pearl Voice as seen on one of the DVD covers.

Apart from her regular mermaid form, Hanon has two other forms. The first is her human form, and the other is her idol form.

Mermaid Form

When in her mermaid form, Hanon has long, wavy, blue hair with two stars in her bangs. She wears an aquamarine clamshell bra, and a bracelet around her upper left arm. On her darker blue tail, and on her wrist, she wears double navy blue pearl bracelets. She wears a shell locket containing her pearl around her neck just as she does in all her forms, and star earrings.

Human Form

Her human form is significantly different from her mermaid form. Hanon’s long aqua hair gets short (but stays wavy) and turns darker. She also has brown eyes in her human form. She wears a barrette shaped like an ‘x’ in her bangs, and she is seen in many outfits. Other than Seira, she is the shortest mermaid princess.

Idol Form

Hanon in her Mizuiro Pearl Voice form first idol.

Hanon in her human form.

To transform, Hanon shouts “Mizuiro Pearl Voice!”. Her idol form consists of a short light blue dress, with gloves and boots to match it. The dress is light blue on the top part, and the skirt is sky blue with three layers and ruffles. Her gloves and boots are baby blue with pearl bracelets on her ankles and wrists. She still wears her star barettes and earrings, and her shell necklace. About halfway through the series, Hanon, Lucia, and Rina get new upgrade outfits, making them even more elaborate. Strangly, her hair seems longer in her second idol form.

Hanon’s birthday is on 3rd of may (taurus)

Special Powers And Items

Like the rest of the mermaid princesses, Hanon needs her pearl in order to transform into her idol form. Her pearl is also needed in order to summon Aqua Regina. When in her idol form, her voice is transmitted by a microphone like object called the E-pitch and is used to defeat the enemies.

She says “Love Shower Pitch!” in the anime, although in the manga she says “Pretty Sugar Pitch!” in order to defeat enemies.

Her special songs are ‘Ever Blue’ and ‘Mizuiro no Senritsu’.

Types of Jolpan

Variations on jolpan include Bora saul, Komal Saul, Xandoh, Chira, Muri, Akhoi along with curd, jaggery, yogurt and various Pitha.

Bora saul

Bora saul is boiled and served as Jolpan with curd or milk, jaggery or sugar.

Komal Saul

Kumol saul is a unique type of rice from Assam that can be eaten without cooking. It is rendered fluffy and edible by being soaked in water for a short time. The rice may be eaten with milk or curd, jaggery, yogurt after being immersed in warm water for just fifteen minutes or so.

Chira

Chira (Flattened rice, also called beaten rice) is a dehusked rice which is flattened into flat light dry flakes. These flakes of rice swell when added to liquid, whether hot or cold, as they absorb water, milk or any other liquids. It can be eaten raw by immersing it in plain water or milk or curd, with salt or sugar or jaggery to taste, or lightly fried in oil.

Muri

Muri (puffed rice) is made by heating sand in a pot, and then throwing in grains of rice. The rice may be washed in brine to provide seasoning. The rice puffs up and is separated from the sand by a strainer. It is served with hot milk or curd and jaggery or sugar.

Hurum

It is prepared from Kola bora, Ghiu bora, Pakhi bora or Ronga bora (varieties of Bora saul). The rice is soaked for three to four days and then it is fried. The fried rice is pounded in dheki, a homemade wooden mill in Assam to pound grains, and sifted to dehusk. Now the pounded and dehusked rice is again fried in hot sand and thus Hurum is prepared. It is served with curd, hot milk, yogurt, sugar or jaggery.

Sunga Saul

Dehusked Aroi bora saul is soaked for 2/3 hours. Then it is put in an immature bamboo tube and a little water or sometimes coconut milk is added to it. Banana leaf is used as cork. The tube is roasted in fire and Sunga saul is prepared. Removing the tube the substance is served with curd, hot milk, yogurt, sugar ect.

Pithaguri

Rice flour (Pithaguri in Assamese) is fried and served with hot milk, jaggery and sometimes with ripe banana or ripe jackfruit. It is a common type of jolpan.

Suji

Suji (Semolina) is also one type of common jolpan, a type of dessert. Like pithaguri it is heated on a frying pan and water is added to make it a paste and then served with hot milk.

Koni-dhan

The basic preparation consists in washing the millet (Konidhan in Assamese; Koni = tiny; dhan = rice) and toasting it while moving until one notes a characteristic scent. Then five measures of boiling water for each two measures of millet are added with some sugar or salt. The mixture is cooked covered using low flame for 30-35 minutes.

Kath Aloo

Yam (Kath aloo in Assamese) is boiled, peeled and served with hot milk and jaggery or sugar. Sweet potato is also served this way. These are served as jolpan especially in Magh Bihu. Fried Kath aloo is also served.

Pitha

It has been suggested that Til Pitha be merged into this article or section. (Discuss)

It has been suggested that Ghila Pitha be merged into this article or section. (Discuss)

Pitha is a ricecake or pancake, a thin-flat cake prepared from a batter and cooked on a hot griddle or frying pan. It is an inseparable part of Jolpan in Assam. It is a special class of rice preparation generally made only on special occasions like Bihu in Assam. Made usually with soaked and ground rice, they could be fried in oil, roasted over a slow fire or baked and rolled over a hot plate. Some pithas are- Til Pitha, Ghila Pitha, Xutuli Pitha, Sunga Pitha, Bhapotdiya Pitha, Lakhimi Pitha, Tora Pitha, Tekeli Pitha, Muthiya Pitha or Kholasapori Pitha.

Til Pitha

Til Pitha is a type of pancake. It is a special class of rice preparation and generally made only on special occasions like Bihu in Assam. Bora saul, a glutinous type of rice is soaked and ground. Then a certain quantity of this rice flour is baked, filled up with sesame seeds, ground coconut and dried rind of orange, jaggery etc. and pressed and rolled with many folders. This rice cake is…(and so on)

Work hardening, strain hardening, or cold work is the strengthening of a material by, macroscopically speaking, plastic deformation (which has the nano-scopic effect of increasing the material’s dislocation density). As the material becomes increasingly saturated with new dislocations, more dislocations are prevented from nucleating (a resistance to dislocation-formation develops). This resistance to dislocation-formation manifests itself as a resistance to plastic deformation; hence, the observed strengthening.

In metallic crystals, irreversible deformation is usually carried out on a microscopic scale by defects called dislocations, which are created by fluctuations in local stress fields within the material culminating in a lattice rearrangement as the dislocations propagate through the lattice. At normal temperatures the dislocations are not annihilated by annealing. Instead, the dislocations accumulate, interact with one another, and serve as pinning points or obstacles that significantly impede their motion. This leads to an increase in the yield strength of the material and a subsequent decrease in ductility.

Any material with a reasonably high melting point such as metals and alloys can be strengthened in this fashion. Alloys not amenable to heat treatment, including low-carbon steel, are often work-hardened. Some materials cannot be work-hardened at normal ambient temperatures; for example indium, which has a low melting point. This makes indium suitable for manufacturing gaskets, which deform to fill gaps, for high-vacuum use.

Work hardening is often produced by the same process that shapes the metal into its final form, including cold rolling (contrast hot rolling) and cold drawing. Techniques have been designed to maintain the general shape of the workpiece during work hardening, including shot peening and equal channel angular extrusion. A material’s work hardenability can be predicted by analyzing a stress-strain curve, or studied in context by performing hardness tests before and after a process.

Cold forming is a type of cold working that involves forging operations, such as extrusion, drawing or coining, performed at low temperatures. Cold working may also refer to the process through which a material is given this quality. Such deformation increases the concentration of dislocations which may subsequently form low-angle grain boundaries surrounding sub-grains. Cold working generally results in a higher yield strength as a result of the increased number of dislocations and the Hall-Petch effect of the sub-grains, and a decrease in ductility. The effects of cold working may be reversed by annealing the material at high temperatures where recovery and recrystallization reduce the dislocation density.

History

Copper was the first metal in common use for tools and containers since it is one of the few metals available in non-oxidized form, not requiring the smelting of an ore. Copper is easily softened by heating and cooling (it does not harden by quenching, as in cool water). In this annealed state it may then be hammered, stretched and otherwise formed, progressing toward the desired final shape, but becoming harder and less ductile as work progresses. If work continues beyond a certain hardness the metal will tend to fracture when worked and so it may be re-annealed periodically as the shape progresses. Annealing is stopped when the workpiece is near its final desired shape, and so the final product will have a desired stiffness and hardness. The technique of Repouss exploits these properties of copper, enabling the construction of durable jewelry articles and sculptures (including the Statue of Liberty).

For metal objects designed to flex, such as springs, specialized alloys are usually employed in order to avoid work hardening (a result of plastic deformation) and metal fatigue, with specific heat treatments required to obtain the necessary characteristics.

Devices made from aluminum and its alloys, such as aircraft, must be carefully designed to minimize or accommodate flexure, which can lead to work hardening and in turn stress cracking, possibly causing catastrophic failure. For this reason modern aluminum aircraft will have an imposed working lifetime (dependent upon the type of loads encountered), after which the aircraft must be retired.

James Mally, N.D., ear candling a patient in an experiment to determine its efficacy. [1]

Material that appears after ear candling, sometimes alleged to be earwax and toxins, was found to be residue from the candle itself.

Ear candling, also called ear coning or thermal-auricular therapy, is an alternative medicine practice claimed to improve general health and well-being by lighting one end of a hollow candle and placing the other end in the ear canal. According to medical researchers, it is both dangerous and ineffective.[2] Claims that the practice removes earwax have been thoroughly debunked.

Procedure

One end of a cylinder or cone of waxed cloth is lit, and the other placed into the subject’s ear. Usually the subject is lying on one side with the treated ear uppermost and the candle vertical, and can be stuck through a paper plate or aluminum pie tin to protect against any hot wax or ash falling down the side. However, some have the subject sit up, keep the candle nearly horizontal, and watch for dripping wax. Some candles have an internal filter to catch debris. The flame is cut back occasionally with scissors and extinguished between two and four inches from the subject. Its proponents claim that the flame creates negative pressure, drawing wax and debris out of the ear canal, which appears as a dark residue.

An ear candling session can last from 15 minutes to 45 minutes, during which time a series of 1 or 2 ear candles may be burned for each ear.

Criticism

The Spokane Ear, Nose, and Throat Clinic conducted a research study in 1996 which concluded that ear candling does not produce negative pressure and was ineffective in removing wax from the ear canal.[2] Several studies have shown that ear candles produce the same residue when burnt without ear insertion and that the residue is simply candle wax and soot.[3][4][5]

In October 2007, the FDA issued an alert identifying Ear Candles (a.k.a., Ear cones and Auricular candles) as “dangerous to health when used in the dosage or manner, or with the frequency or duration, prescribed, recommended, or suggested in the labeling thereof” … “since the use of a lit candle in the proximity of a person’s face would carry a high risk of causing potentially severe skin/hair burns and middle ear damage.”[6]

Prof. Edzard Ernst has published critically on the subject of ear candles noting that “There are no data to suggest that it is effective for any condition. Furthermore, ear candles have been associated with ear injuries. The inescapable conclusion is that ear candles do more harm than good. Their use should be discouraged.”[7]

A 2007 paper in the journal Canadian Family Physician concludes “Ear candling appears to be popular and is heavily advertised with claims that could seem scientific to lay people. However, its claimed mechanism of action has not been verified, no positive clinical effect has been reliably recorded, and it is associated with considerable risk. No evidence suggests that ear candling is an effective treatment for any condition. On this basis, we believe it can do more harm than good and we recommend that GPs discourage its use.”[8]

As of 2008, there are at least two cases in which people have set their houses on fire practicing ear candling, one of which resulted in death.[9]

Product regulations

In Europe, some ear candles are regulated as medical devices, tested for safety and bear the CE mark (93/42/EEC).[10] The CE mark is mostly self-issued by the manufacturer.[11]

While ear candles are widely available in the U.S., selling or importing them with medical claims is illegal. This means that one cannot market ear candles as products that “Diagnose, cure, treat, or prevent any disease”.[6]

In a report, Health Canada states “There is no scientific proof to support claims that ear candling provides medical benefits … However, there is plenty of proof that ear candling is dangerous.” It says that while some people claim to be selling the candles “for entertainment purposes only”, the Canadian government consider that there is no reasonable non-medical use, and hence any sale of the devices is illegal in Canada.[12]

Origin

Although manufacturers of ear candles often refer to them as “Hopi” ear candles, there is no such treatment within traditional Hopi healing practices. Vanessa Charles, public relations officer for the Hopi Tribal Council, has stated that ear candling “is not and has never been a practice conducted by the Hopi tribe or the Hopi people”.[13]

The Hopi tribe has repeatedly asked Biosun, the manufacturer of ‘Hopi Ear Candles’ to stop using the Hopi name.[14] Biosun has not complied with this request and continues to claim that ear candles…(and so on)

“Good Times Bad Times” is a song by English rock band Led Zeppelin, featured as the opening track on their 1969 debut album Led Zeppelin.

For the lead guitar solo, guitarist Jimmy Page passed his Telecaster guitar through a Leslie speaker to create a swirling effect.[1][2] This type of speaker contains a rotating paddle and was designed for Hammond organ. However, guitars could be used with it. George Harrison and Eric Clapton also did this on the Cream song “Badge”, and Harrison used this in several of The Beatles’ recordings.[3] In an interview he gave to Guitar World magazine in 1993, Page explained that:

I do remember using the board to overdrive a Leslie cabinet for the main riff in “How Many More Times”. It doesn’t sound like a Leslie because I wasn’t employing the rotating speakers. Surprisingly, that sound has real weight. The guitar is going through the board, then through an amp which was driving the Leslie cabinet. It was a very successful experiment.[4]

Page, also the band’s producer, placed microphones all over the recording studio to capture a live sound when this song was recorded.

This song is also notable for drummer John Bonham’s repeated use of a series of two sixteenth-note triplets on a single bass drum, an effect many subsequent rock drummers have imitated. Bonham had reportedly developed this technique after listening to Vanilla Fudge. He was unaware that drummer Carmine Appice was actually playing on a double bass set. As Page has stated:

The most stunning thing about the track, of course, is Bonzo’s amazing kick drum. It’s superhuman when you realize he was not playing with double kick. That’s one kick drum! That’s when people started understanding what he was all about.[4]

Bass player John Paul Jones has also remarked on his own contribution to the track:

Usually anything [by Led Zeppelin] with lots of notes was mine and anything with chunky chords was Page’s. Things like “Good Times Bad Times”, those are my sort of riffs, they’re quite busy’.[5]

Jones says that the riff he wrote for this song was the most difficult one he ever wrote.[6]

“Good Times Bad Times” was rarely played live at Led Zeppelin concerts in its entirety. In a few instances in 1969 it was used as an introduction to “Communication Breakdown”. It also appeared in almost complete form within the “Communication Breakdown” medley performed at the LA Forum on 4 September, 1970 (as can be heard on the Led Zeppelin bootleg recording Live On Blueberry Hill), and several “Whole Lotta Love’ medleys in 1971. It was also the opening song for Led Zeppelin’s reunion show at the O2 Arena, London on December 10, 2007.

The aim of decatising is to stabilise the properties of the fabric developed in finishing.

In decatising, the wool fabric is interleaved with a cotton, polyester/cotton or polyester fabric and rolled up onto a perforated decatising drum under controlled tension. The fabric is steamed for up to ten minutes and then cooled down by drawing ambient air through the fabric roll. The piece is then reversed and steamed again in order to ensure that an even treatment is achieved.

There are several quite different types of decatising machines including batch decatising machines, continuous decatising machines, wet decatising machines and dry decatising machines.

Catherine II’s carved, painted and gilded Coronation Coach (Hermitage Museum).

A carriage is a wheeled vehicle for people, usually horse-drawn. It is especially designed for private passenger use and for comfort or elegance, though some are also used to transport goods. It may be light, smart and fast or heavy, large and comfortable. Carriages normally have suspension using leaf springs, elliptical springs (in the 19th century) or leather strapping. A public passenger vehicle would not usually be called a carriage terms for these include stagecoach, charabanc and omnibus. Palanquins and sedan chairs are excluded, these being litters or wheelless vehicles.

Overview

The word carriage (abbreviated carr or cge) is from Old Northern French cariage, to carry in a vehicle.[1] The word car, then meaning a kind of two-wheeled cart for goods, also came from Old Northern French about the beginning of the 14th century;[1] it was also used for railway carriages, and was extended to cover automobile around the end of the nineteenth century, when early models were called horseless carriages.

A carriage is sometimes called a team, as in “horse and team”. A carriage with its horse is a rig. An elegant horse-drawn carriage with its retinue of servants is an equipage. A carriage together with the horses, harness and attendants is a turnout or setout. A procession of carriages is a cavalcade.

History of carriages

A Gala Coup, 17th century; Royal Museums of Art and History, Brussels

Some horsecarts found in Celtic graves show hints that their platform was suspended in a frame, elastically.[2] First century BCE Romans used sprung wagons for overland journeys.[3] With the decline of the these civilizations these techniques almost disappeared.

In the Middle Ages all travellers who were not walking rode, save the elderly and the infirm. A trip in an unsprung cart over unpaved roads was not lightly undertaken. Closed carriages began to be more widely used by the upper classes in the 16th century. In 1601 a short-lived law was passed in England banning the use of carriages by men, it being considered effeminate.[citation needed] Better sprung vehicles were developed in the 17th century. New lighter and more fashionably varied conveyances, with fanciful new names, began to compete with one another from the mid-18th century. Coachbuilders cooperated with carvers, gilders, painters, lacquerworkers, glazers and upholsterers to produce not just the family’s state coach for weddings and funerals but light, smart fast comfortable vehicles for pleasure riding and display.

In British and French coaches, the coachman drove from a raised coachbox at the front. In Spain the driver continued to ride one of the horses, as also in the 1939 state visit procession in Canada.

From the 1860s, few rich Europeans continued to use their posting coaches for long-distance travel: a first-class railway carriage was the faster modern alternative. Then, in the 1890s, just as automobiles came into use, “coaching” became an upper-class sport in Britain and America, where gentlemen would take the reins of the kinds of large vehicles of types generally driven by a professional coachman.

Carriage construction

Body

George VI and Queen Elizabeth in a landau with footmen and an outrider, Canada 1939

Carriages may be enclosed or open, depending on the type.[4] The top cover for the body of a carriage, called the head or hood, is often flexible and designed to be folded back when desired. Such a folding top is called a bellows top or calash. A hoopstick forms a light framing member for this kind of hood. The top, roof or second-story compartment of a closed carriage, especially a diligence, was called an imperial. A closed carriage may have side windows called quarter lights (British) as well as windows in the doors. On the forepart of an open carriage, a screen of wood or leather called a dashboard intercepts water, mud or snow thrown up by the heels of the horses. The dashboard or carriage top sometimes has a projecting sidepiece called a wing (British). A foot iron or footplate may serve as a carriage step.

A carriage driver sits on a box or perch, usually elevated and small. When at the front it is known as a dickey box, a term also used for a seat at the back for servants. A footman might use a small platform at the rear called a footboard or a seat called a rumble behind the body. Some carriages have a moveable seat called a jump seat. Some seats had an attached backrest called a…(and so on)
